This year’s unseasonably wet and cold weather may make the idea of heatstroke in the UK laughable, but recent history suggests that a patch of intense sunshine and warmth could arrive at any time. UK website the heatwaves of 2022 caused nearly 3,000 heat-related deaths, many of which could have been prevented with the right preparation and treatment. Many families will also be escaping to southern Europe for holidays, where record-breaking temperatures have been the norm for the last few years.
Heatstroke is a clear and present danger in hot weather, so what should pharmacists say about the dangers of heatstroke to help to minimise the risk to their customers this summer?
Heatstroke occurs when the body’s core temperature rises above 40°C for an extended period. At this point, the body is unable to regulate its temperature. Heatstroke can lead to serious side effects, including confusion, seizures, organ failure, and even death.

It is important that your customers recognise the symptoms of heatstroke so that, should they or a family member be affected, they can obtain prompt medical care, which is vital to prevent serious side effects from setting in.
Changes in blood pressure can be an important sign of heatstroke: initially, blood pressure may rise as the body attempts to dissipate the excess heat but, as the condition progresses and the body’s heat regulation mechanisms become overwhelmed, blood pressure can drop significantly. A blood pressure monitor can be invaluable in helping people to quickly assess whether someone is suffering from heatstroke and to take fast remedial action.
To prevent heatstroke, your customers should be encouraged to take precautions in hot and sunny weather. They should drink plenty of cold drinks, avoiding alcohol where possible; wear light loose-fitting clothing, preferably manufactured from cotton; refrain from exercise and sports activities; and stay indoors at the hottest time of the day.
Because heatstroke can cause serious and potentially life-threatening complications, prompt medical treatment is essential. If your customers suspect someone to have heatstroke, they should immediately summon medical assistance from the emergency services. While awaiting their arrival, they should ensure the patient is indoors or in shade and drinks plentiful amounts of water to rehydrate their body.
